Benjamin Lacombe

Mar 25

A little over a year ago now, I came across the work of the talented young artist Benjamin Lacombe. A graduate from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris, Benjamin’s initial interest was of illustrating comics before going on to illustrate and publish numerous children’s books.
His artwork brings to mind the pop-surrealist style, an art movement such artists as Mark Ryden have brought into maintstream culture. Colourful and child-like while evoking a darker, macabre subtext, Benjamin’s beautiful illustrations show a skill and sensitivity to detail far beyond his years.

When I saw he had published a flamenco inspired book  ’La Mélodie des Tuyaux’, I knew I had found the perfect gift for my sister, Kara, who is an artist and professional flamenco dancer.  The book is gorgeously illustrated and the colours and mood of the book are fantastic. It even comes with it’s own musical CD. I also had to treat myself to getting ‘La Petite Socière’ which I love reading – and has been great help in improving my French ^-^
Below are a few pictures of ‘La Melodie des Tuyaux‘ with my sister Kara.

Highlights of Fall/Winter 2010 Part 2

Mar 18

continuing on my favourite collections of the season…

Anna Sui

The perpetual hippie, Anna Sui, produced another signature collection layering knits, furs and Art Nouveau prints.  I love the burgundies and earth tones used in the collection and the way in which multiple patterns were mixed to piece together complex eye candy. Some of my favourite pieces include the fur trimmed moccasins and the creative take on leopard print. Complete collection here.

Blumarine

Anna Molinari’s Blue Marine fashion collection was all fun and kitsch with it’s glitzy looks for Fall 2010 collection. As ultra girly as ever Blue Marine offered outfits decked out in silvery sparkle, animal print and lots of fringe. Shiny leather rocked out some of the looks, punctuating in deep blacks an otherwise light pastel palette. Complete collection here.

Burberry

Christopher Bailey created a strong showing for Burberry, with his burnt colour pallet and endless stream of wearable coats in every desirable silhouette. From military to oversized to prim-and-proper Burberry had it all without losing any cohesion in the collection. Thigh high leather boots, wrapped bodice dresses and amazing textured fabrics completed the look. See complete collection Here.

Quick note: Please excuse the construction work on the site. Still fixing minor problems such as the page not looking right on all browsers esp. Explorer 7.  Will be fixed shortly.

Minimalism might be the spirit of this season but it was the collections that displayed  luscious fabrics, extravagant embellishment and the touches of playful fantasy that caught my eye. The following are a few of my favourite collections this season.

Andrew Gn

It is easy to love Andrew Gn’s collection what with it’s liquid like satins, opulent lace embellishments and Rococo styling. His mostly black and charcoal colours were offset by a few muted tones in reds, yellows and greens but it was his various styles of military jackets that were the show stealer. See whole collection here.

Unique

Topshop’s Unique collection should first be applauded for whoever their choice of genius styler was. The array of furry animal hats, antlers and the bushy caveman eyebrows showed a sense of humour while the clothing was skilfully detailed and very wearable. Surely to be a hit with this seasons buyer. See full collection here.

Kane

Not generally the biggest fan of Christopher Kane, I was quite taken by his combination of lace, leather and embroidery in this season’s collection.  The bright colours in blues, pinks, yellows and purples were a stark contrast to the black and created almost folkloric, hand-crafted look. See entire collection here.

Maide and her Beautiful Spats

Mar 15

Hey everyone, I am finally back and although my blog may not look different I have switched over to WordPress.  Some of the new features include a RSS subscription feed, a new Etsy Widget at the side and an updated comment section.

Things have been super busy for me lately with getting settled in to my new place, familiarizing myself with this area of town and getting up to speed with my new fulltime job at Marquis of London but I am hoping to get back to painting shortly.  Until then I have some exciting news, the very talented Maide has created a beautiful collaged spat using one of my paintings. I am very touched she chose my art as I am such of fan of hers already.  They went up for sale this week so if you want to own one of Maide’s exquisite works of art they can be purchased at DaWanda.
